UNY PPS Science Education Group Held 1st International Seminar on Science Education (ISSE) 2015

Saturday, October 31 2015 PPs UNY held the first International Seminar on Science Education (ISSE). This activity, which was led by students from the science education group (Chemical Education, Biology Education, Physics Education, and Science Education) PPs UNY, was the first International Seminar held by the PPs UNY science education group. With the theme, "Harmonization of Science Technology and Society (STS) in Science Learning to Prepare 21st Century Generation", the activity took place from 07.00 - 16.30 WIB and took place in the Main Meeting Room, 2nd Floor of the UNY Rectorate. The activity was moderated by Drs. Jaslin Ikhsan, M.App.Sc., Ph.D (UNY chemistry education lecturer) aims to understand (1) the integration of learning media in STS in science learning to prepare the XXI century generation (2) character education in science learning to prepare the generation XXI century (3) harmonization of STS in the science learning curriculum to prepare the 21st century generation presenting 2 international speakers from 2 different continents, namely Rena Heap, Ph.D (The University of Auckland, New Zealand) and B. Sumintono, Ph. D (University of Malaya, Malaysia).

Not only did we receive material from the keynote speakers which contained science learning both in Auckland and Malaysia, the 1st ISSE UNY 2015 also held a call for papers, so this activity was divided into 2 sessions, namely the main seminar session which contained material presentations from the keynote speakers and continued parallel seminar sessions by pre-selected speakers. Of the 86 papers that were selected, 59 papers finally passed the presentation stage and were then published in both print and electronic media. The participants and presenters who took part in this activity came from various groups, including lecturers, students from doctoral programs, master's programs, undergraduate programs, teachers and others from various regions in Indonesia, from Aceh to Papua. Not to forget, students from the UNY KNB program also enlivened this activity. The KNB program students come from 5 different countries, namely Burundi, Myanmar, Nigeria, Thailand and Mali.

The participants, numbering around 260 people, also seemed enthusiastic about the presentation delivered by the keynote speakers, this was evident from the participants' curiosity in asking questions and listening to what the keynote speakers delivered. Not only that, in the parallel seminar session the presenters and participants were no less enthusiastic. As stated by Fifi, "For the first international seminar held, this activity has a good, communicative event concept, the facilities provided to participants and presenters are also good, emphasizing the principle of benefit rather than profit and loss. Parallel seminar sessions are also good, only still bilingual, maybe in the future it will be full English. "And maybe in the future the selection for incoming papers, especially idea/study papers, could be more stringent in order to get the best quality papers," said this UNY PPs physics education student.

Lina also expressed the same thing, "The event was good, well done, maybe next year international conferences, workshops and the like could be held. "The parallel seminar sessions still need improvement, such as some of the paper titles which are still typing incorrectly," said the UNY PPs English language education student who was one of the moderators of the parallel seminar at the 1st ISSE UNY 2015. The activity is expected to be able to provide insight and knowledge regarding this theme too. It is hoped that it can continue and become a regular event held by the PPs UNY science education group. For this reason, after this activity, it is hoped that there will be a 2nd ISSE, 3rd ISSE, and so on which will continue to increase the knowledge, insight and friendship of academics, especially in the education sector in Indonesia.
